Interview with Nile Flores

Nile’s cat, Sesshoumaru, loves boxes. Wonder how much it costs to ship this cute cat?

JEN SWISHER: When did you start using WordPress?

NILE FLORES: I was a b2 cafelog user, so I went from that to switching over to beta. So, from the beginning when WordPress was released in May 2003. I had been using b2 cafelog since early 2002, and manually blogged before that.

JEN SWISHER: What are a few takeaways that attendees will get from your talk?

NILE FLORES: Knowing Google’s Quality Guidelines, or webmaster guidelines is important for ALL content creators, whether you’re a blogger or a content creator for your business (or hired to create content for someone else’s business.) The guidelines might be a bit much to take in, so I’m breaking it down into the things you can do.

JEN SWISHER: WordPress is turning 15 years old. What would you like to see in the future for WordPress?

NILE FLORES: I’d like to see better emphasis on security with our influencers in the WordPress community. There are some people who are doing this, but WordCamps and meetups aren’t enough. If you’re teaching WordPress or blogging about WordPress, you should be including security. It should be a major topic under your WordPress category, and easy for people to find.

A lot of people kind of stumble upon WordPress security because they got hacked. Let’s try making this a core highlighted topic, because protecting your investment, your website, is extremely important.

JEN SWISHER: “And just for funsies”, over the past few years, the WordPress community has seen the rise of the cute Wapuu character? Heard of it? And if so, what’s your favorite Wapuu? (Wapuu Reference: https://wapu.us/ )

NILE FLORES: I love anime, so Wapumura Kenshin is definitely my favorite, with a tie for second between Wapuunk, and WordCamp Tokyo’s 2014 mecha Wapuu. Oh what the heck, I love Wapuu! Gotta collect them all! 😀

JEN SWISHER: What is your favorite area of the WordPress admin?

NILE FLORES: I love to write, so the content editor is my favorite. It’s where all the magic happens!

JEN SWISHER: What are the top three WordPress plugins that you believe every WordPress user should have installed?

NILE FLORES:

  • Yoast SEO
  • UpdraftPlus
  • Shield Security
