Localization and Internationalization

WordPress is a platform used by people in many different countries using many different languages. This is possible because WordPress and many of its themes and plugins have been translated by hundreds of volunteers from all over the world. This talk is going to be an introduction to how to make your theme or plugin translatable as well as some of the pitfalls you might run into along the way.

At WashU we serve a large international audience. So recently we have been looking at how we can better internationalize our code so that we can use our themes and plugins to create sites for people all over the world.

This is a big issue so this is going to be skimming the surface a bit. But I hope to cover the following:

  • What are Internationalization and Localization?
  • What do I have to do for my plugin or theme to be internationalized?
  • Now that the code is set up, how do you actually do the localization?
  • Helping translate open source projects.
